Open house set Saturday for new store manager

McKenzie Schultz
Prairie Chic Handcrafts and Antique is hosting an open house this weekend to welcome their new store manager.
Area residents can meet McKenzie Schultz and wish outgoing manager Stephanie Gilbert farewell from 11 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the store, located at 9 S. Broadway St., Herington.
Gilbert resigned from her position in April to relocate back home to Idaho to live closer to her family there.
"I hope to see many residents from from all over the Tri-County area who I met during my newspaper experience before I leave the region," she said about her departure. "I'm confident that McKenzie (Schultz) can use her imagination and access to Pinterest to really take the store to the next level."
Schultz has experience in a consignment store in Georgia, where she worked as a leader among a group of volunteers.
Stephanie Gilbert
"She had a great rapport with consignors in the Georgia store and she has already had several experiences working with our consignors here in the local area," Gilbert said about Schultz. "She has already taken initiative working inside the store for a bit this weekend and will be a wonderful asset to the business."
Denise Homer, store co-owner, concurred.
"McKenzie (Schultz) has a great artistic flair and a passion to see potential in vintage items our consignors bring in to sell at Prairie Chic," she said. "We are excited to see how she offers classes to encourage area residents how they can also upgrade worn furniture items to sell in our store."
The regular store hours at Prairie Chic are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. For more information about the open house or the store in general, call the store at 785-258-8004, or contact the store manager at PrairieChicKansas@gmail.com or (785) 571-3955.

Read our Consignors Corner -- Concolleen's Visions

Here is the full view of Concolleen's Visions
rented space at Prairie Chic!
Welcome to the first installment of a special promotion for our vendors and consignors at Prairie Chic. This one is about Concolleen's Visions, a woman who takes photos of the Tri-County region, especially near Ramona and the Herington lakes area. Here is some information and insight about this vendor.
Consignors Corner: Concolleen's Visions

Here are some extra pictures shared by
Concolleen's Visions in her rented space.
  • Products include: Local photography and memories on canvas, general occasion cards
  • Lease signed with Prairie Chic: May 7, 2015
  • Length of experience with photography: 25+ years
  • More about my experience:  I have lived in Ramona for 36 years. I just can't miss an opportunity to go out and share what the beauty is in this area with other people. I think it's my calling because it just happened. It started with a man who wanted me to come take pictures on his homestead west of Ramona before the county made him clear the land. I just took pictures of what I saw and I didn't know what I was doing, but it turned out that he was very grateful for what I did for him, to document his history of his homestead.
  • Something about the consignment experience that might surprise our customers: While I was setting up my booth space, there were some customers who came in and talked to me. They had seen my pictures on the internet and on Facebook, but they never realized what was behind them or what they were about, besides just being neat pictures. They didn't realize the pictures were taken in local locations. I also explained to them that I see things that other people don't appreciate or stop and look at even though they pass by them on a daily basis. Each view is a gift and you will never see it exactly the same way again. Every picture has a feeling and a memory attached to it. My photos are memory makers, really, for a lot of the people who have moved away from the rural areas. My Visions can take them down Memory Lane and they share that with me. I'm just surprised that people are willing to share that with me.
  • Anything else to add: At Prairie Chic, I am just pleased that it has done as well as it has and that it has to be a long-term business. If you weren't doing a good job, you wouldn't have made it a year, so that's what kind of got me to where I put my Visions in there. I like the differences and different items in there. I love Stephanie's advertising and how she reaches out and pulls people in with what you've got in the store. I love it, I really do. That is marketing and it's subtle marketing that reaches to those who didn't know they were looking for something! I like that better than a big ad. I like what you do. I hope the next person has a similar vision and can work out of the perpetual square, so to speak.
This is what the space started with, on May 7.
Here is a close up view of Concolleen's Visions
on the wall space rented for these photographs.

Prairie Chic now hiring; also for sale or lease

Prairie Chic Handcrafts & Antiques is now hiring for its store manager position as Stephanie Gilbert has decided to relocate to the Pacific Northwest. Deadline is May 28. Job duties include: recruiting vendors, marketing online, communication with vendors/customers/bookkeeper/store owners, general store duties, and being a point of contact for other local properties. Other knowledge of the antiques business, storage units or sales work would be helpful.  Those who are interested in applying should send a cover letter and resume to prairiechickansas@gmail.com.

Store owners Dr. Mark (DVM) and Denise Homer have also decided to expand the opportunity to include selling the business alone or the business and the building to someone who would like to own and run the store himself or herself, so Prairie Chic Handcrafts & Antiques vendor booth space and consignment sales store is now also up for sale or lease. The store building + business is for sale for $125,000 while the business alone is $15,000, with first five months of rent FREE (then $1,000/mo.). There is a climate-controlled storage business inside that is negotiable, also. The business has been open for one year and its manager is departing, so here is your chance to own it!! Our vendors should not be concerned about these changes, as we will keep you informed of any transitions as soon as we can.

For more information, contact Stephanie Gilbert via email at prairiechickansas@gmail.com or via text or call to 785-571-3955.

Store celebration set for anniversary festivities!!!

Have you heard the news yet?!? We are celebrating our FIRST ANNIVERSARY on a busy weekend in downtown Herington next week!
"We have added so many unique items on our open sales floor and many vendors to our booth spaces to really help fill up our store,” said Stephanie Gilbert, store manager. “These items include a vintage pump organ, several wooden rocking chairs, an English Walnut Wardrobe, handmade crocheted and quilted items and more other handmade and antique pieces.
Cake will be served at 3 p.m. Friday, April 24 to local and area customers, which have come in to shop from literally all four corners of the state.
Prairie Chic includes booth spaces rented for antiques, repurposed or collectible items; floor space for quality used furniture and art works sold on consignment; and climate-controlled self storage units. The store is located at 9 S. Broadway St., in Herington.
“Since we opened during last year’s car show, we hope to see many familiar faces again this weekend,” concluded Gilbert, who is also a member of the Visit Herington Tourism Board.
Not related to the store festivities, the tourism board is also hosting a Street Dance and Cruise In event with The Clearview Band that evening. On Saturday is the Throttle Jockeys Fourth Annual Car Show downtown and then Drag Races at the Herington Regional Airport round out the busy weekend in town.
For more information about the Prairie Chic store, contact Stephanie Gilbert, store manager, at PrairieChicKansas@gmail.com or 785-571-3955.
