Hoosiers at the Prairie

With the crisp cooler winds blowing through the Prairie, we have had some interesting items coming and going through the store.
Pianos and trunks have been sold and now we have a very well preserved Hoosier cabinet for those who are in need of some extra storage.

What is perfect about this Hoosier cabinet is the fact of the interior components that are often missing or in very used-worn state. This is is fabulous. Ready for your spices, flours and dry-goods.
Clean and working.
Nice size of counter space…..not just for a kitchen, maybe pantry or even laundry room.
Whats nice about antique furniture pieces like this Hoosier, is that the eclectic tastes of our homes can have this piece used in more than just its original purpose. Imagine this cabinet in the laundry room, with the detergent in the larger bins, buttons and thread in the small jars for quick laundry fixes.
Use it in a craft room, store your fabrics and crafting materials…ideas are plenty.
So give Carol a quick call for more info before this piece is gone.

Trunks Anyone?

Well, if you have been looking for a new project or in need of some extra storage, why not try repurposing a Trunk.
Prairie Chic just had a great delivery of antique trunks in various sizes for those special projects.
If you would like to take on a creative piece take a look at what you can create.
Clean up and add some height to make a cool entertaining console.
Open it up and upholster fun seating, Prairie Chic has some great alternative legs from Antique salvage that can be used for great legs and bases.
Reuse a chair base to make a cool end table.
So take a quick look around the store and find all the pieces to make that one unique piece for your home, maybe even two?
Come by and check the trunks out before their gone.

We would also like to welcome Jennifer Deist our newest vendor, come by and check out her new space and collections.

Music Re-Designed

Thought I'd share something that's trending in the world of Re-purposing…..Pianos!
Many homes have had the issue of pianos handed down thru their families or have had to deal with that huge and unused piano left behind found somewhere in the corner of a room.
What to do?

or if you like to re-do something unusual and create that unique piece, try to redesign a piano.
Here are a few ideas and if you are in need of piano, Prairie Chic has a couple that are inexpensive and perfect to redesign yourself.
                     Before a funky 50's organ.
Redo into a aquarium for your pet fish or reptile.
Need a Grand Piano? We have a smaller version that plays wonderfully but if its still to large, redo it.
Maybe a Bookcase
An ornate Eastlake Organ

Wine Bar
or dare to take it apart for the components and reuse the piano keys to create fun elements….here you have a chandelier.
A wall piece for "Your Inner Artist"
So if you would like to create something so personal for your space give us a call for more info on the current pianos we have in the store. (785) 258-8004

With Fall Comes Change….

For those who often check in to see what has been happing around Prairie Chic Kansas, the winds of Fall have been passing through our little store with new items and most importantly a new manager….many who have shopped at the store might have run into her….it's Carol Kellogg.
We are so happy to have her volunteer to step in as we begin the busy Holiday season.
Carol has been with us from the beginning watching and helping us grow and thrilled she has stepped up to help us out.
So we made a quick trip this weekend to get matters organized and were happy to see some very special items throughout the store.
As many of you know, I enjoy finding inspiration on Pinterest and whats so special about finding unique Pins is finding something similar to those right here in the middle of Kansas.
We have an awesome Butcher Block which could be reused as a center kitchen island as seen on Country Living magazines and Blog posts.
Or those who are redoing Bathrooms we have 2 great antique buffets that can be repurposed into wonderful Bath vanities.

So if you would like to give repurposing a try, give Carol a call to see if these items are still available at (785) 258-8004

Upcycle Kind of Style: Filing Cabinets

If we're being honest, there probably is at least one way to repurpose everything. And in some of the other "Upcycle Kind of Style" posts I've picked a couple trendy, more obvious items to give ideas for. Well not today, not this post.
In my pursuit of finding an unusual item in the store to find ways to repurpose, I found the prime example, a filing cabinet. Yeah, that's right, a filing cabinet can be repurposed. Despite the fact that they're usually pretty heavy, and bulky and mostly made of a metal that shows imperfections easily, they CAN be made fabulous. Here are some of the creative ideas I found on the wonderful World Wide Web, Pinterest never fails. (All pictures below were taken off of Pinterest and do not belong to Prairie Chic unless otherwise stated)

If you could find a way to raise the cabinet a little higher this could be a good idea for a mobile kitchen island.

Make your own desk, as big or small as you'd like.

I've never seen a garage organizing system quite like this!

Keep it as a filing cabinet, just make it more aesthetically pleasing!

You can even make a piece of furniture out of several of them!

Raised planters are so in right now!

Here is the ONLY filing cabinet available for sale at Prairie Chic. It is solid oak wood and available for  $87.25 today!

Do you have a request for an item you would like ideas for? Feel free to contact McKenzie Schultz at the store e-mail, prairiechickanas@gmail.com, or at her cell phone through a text or a call at 785-571-3955.

Fall Is In The Air, And So Is Change.

But don't fret, all this change is positive!

First and foremost their has been a lot of feedback and requests to make the consignment fee for floor consignment one flat fee versus the 50% for items under $49.99 and 35% for items $50.00 and over. Well you asked, and Prairie Chic delivered. There is now a flat 35% consignment fee across the board. And with that being said, what's holding you back from bringing in that solid oak dresser that's been sitting in the garage the past couple months, or that antique china hutch you don't have a use for anymore! We can market and sell them for you!

On another note, Prairie Chic has changed it's hours! We've found a way to work smarter, not harder! We still open at 10 A.M. on Wednesdays through Saturday but we are now closing at 5:30 P.M., giving us the same hours as Miss Lizzy's. Additionally, we are working on adding a "Market Days" deal on one Sunday a month, while coordinating with other stores in the area.

Prairie Chic is always welcoming new vendors and consignors with booth rent, wall space, and floor space in our store. Feel free to contact our manager, McKenzie Schultz, with any concerns or questions regarding pricing and contracts at 785-571-3955 by text or call, or through the store e-mail at prairiechickansas@gmail.com

Upcycle Kind of Style: Brooches

Brooches have always been a symbol of beauty and elegance in the fashion realm. In today's day and age they still hold their value and elegant and beautiful, just not in necessarily the same ways they are meant to. Brooches are being used ideally for decoration or by being upcycled to give that extra pazazz to everyday things. Below are several examples of ways they can be remade into items for home decor. (Pictures featured below are to provide inspiration and do not belong to Prairie Chic unless otherwise stated)

Refashion all the brooches or broken jewelry into a new one of a kind piece.

Antique a small frame and pin the brooch to a linen background, framing the piece as an art.

Talk about bedazzling your everyday objects, keys and magnets are clever ideas.

What a pretty and subtle addition to make these jars elegant.

These brooches give such a tastefully vintage spin on the modern bridal bouquet.

Below are pictures of different brooches available for purchase at Prairie Chic as of 9/12/2015.

As always, we are looking for more vendors to fill our store with antiques, handcrafted items and quality furniture. You can contact the store manager, McKenzie Schultz, with any questions, concerns or comments you may have regarding item availability or pricing and commission fees. She can be reached by call or text at 785-571-3955 or e-mailed at prairiechickansas@gmail.com.
