Prairie Chic open despite area snowfall

Prairie Chic is open today, despite the snow falling down in the Herington area, so come on in and see us if you are out and about!
Our sidewalks are now cleared for you to come on in and shop at our store! We've already had several customers stop in and shop, both from Herington and Strong City, visiting our town for a local auction.
These are the two letters, the first written to President James Buchanan explaining the second one. The second letter is written by a person who claims to have been directed by the Spirit of James Polk to write it. It includes references to predict Bleeding Kansas and lists individuals who would later abandon President Buchanan at a crucial time. "He must be careful how he trusts the South where he sees the country in anguish about Kansas' affairs.... I am not sure that Mr. (Sen. Jesse David) Bright (Ind.) will not also abandon him when the news of the War in Kansas reaches Washington." This item would go great to anyone who is greatly interested in Kansas history, American history, or President Polk or President Buchanan.
Are you interested in something to help store some of your items in a room, but something with a nontraditional look? Check out these two items, or for an even larger storage option, we have indoor, climate-controlled units available for you!
We have magazine racks available for your home, too. The prices on these items are $12 (top left), $15 (bottom left) and $18 (yellow/orange).

We are Prairie Chic Handcrafts and Antiques at 9 S. Broadway Herington, KS. Come on in and consign your furniture here, or check out our other vendor booths with vintage and handmade items while you are here, or consider us if you need climate-controlled indoor storage units on a monthly basis, also. We have 10' x 10' for $105 a month or 5' x 7' for $65 a month, plus a $20 one-time administration fee to start your lease. We also have a Pinterest page if you'd like to check that out. We're open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday though Saturday and by appointment Sunday through Tuesday. If you have any other questions or prefer to call with your questions, please contact our store at (785) 258-8004 or the store manager, Stephanie Gilbert, at PrairieChicKansas@gmail.com or (785) 571-3955!

Some thoughts from Prairie Chic owner Denise Homer

I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful Valentines Day this weekend with all those special loved ones.
It's amazing how quickly the year has started and I'm thrilled to see and check in at Prairie Chic and catch up with all the new selections and finds that have been recently showing up in the store.
Though I'm in Texas, the internet has proven to be a huge part of my enthusiam for what Kansas has to offer both Buyers and sellers alike.
As some might know thru Stephanie fantastic web presence she has introduced me (Denise) has one of the owners of the store.
I also like to think of the stores as huge inspiration or gallery of possibilties for those who love to decorate. My husband Mark often takes a huge sigh of relief that I can't get to the store often and shop for myself since I often show him the site and mention.....look what came in!
I can see some pieces being transformed into delightful gems and new decorative pieces for my home.....but just to far to get to.
Still, I can't help to "Monitor" shop....my version of window shopping and seeing what can be done with the right color and technique of painting.
So I thought I would share a few points with the help of Pinterest, and show you some examples of what the transformation could be with some of the items found in the store.
As some might know, this is what I do professionally in Texas.....and love the finish product and how my clients can't believe the change with the old dreary piece they thought would need to be thrown away.
Here are a couple examples….
Ordinary wood pieces are great to re-do by selecting the right color and prepping the surface for paint. This piece also has nice lines that all it needs to refresh it is to find the right new hardware for the Pottery Barn look.
Metal pieces sometimes are overlooked but shouldn't, with some good cleaning and sanding, choosing the right primer….these solid gems can add bright color to rooms.
One important step for the results to be perfect is prepping correctly, many DIYer's get frustrated when the paint doesn't stick or looks tacky/gummy, this is when the right primer is important. Those shown above are "go to" options as well as shellac base primer for shiny surfaces or MDF. Also remember to clean and sand the surface for a good tooth for paint to stick.
Don't over load your brush or roller but use Flotrol to help make your strokes flow evenly.
You can opt to wax the final piece as a sealer or use non-yellowing clear poly for the top coat.
I'll share more steps later….but with recent inventory, I can't help share and encourage  buyers to see that there are some great potentials in need of some creativity.
Soft neutrals are always a favorite palette in any decor.
Have fun and think about Spring will soon be upon us…it's only paint but it can make a huge impact to your space.
Have Fun!

U.S 77 now open following KDOT bridge replacement project completion

Have you heard the news? The U.S. 77 road construction, just east of Herington has now been completed and the highway is once again open for traffic through the local area. The Kansas Department of Transportation project replaced a highway bridge with a box culvert.
It's warm enough today to have our front doors open for business -- literally open for your arrival!

Are you traveling from out of town and need to know how to get here? The Prairie Chic store is located at 9 S. Broadway St., Herington, Kan. Here is the Google Map link to help you find your way here.

If you are headed west from Council Grove, travel 24.0 miles east on U.S. 56. Then, at the four-way stop at the intersection of U.S. 77 and U.S. 56, go straight onto Business 56 until you come to Broadway Street. Then turn right to head north 0.2 miles (about four blocks) to Prairie Chic, which is located on the west side (left) of the street.

Or, to come north from the U.S. 50 round-about in Florence, you would travel 30.4 miles on U.S. 77. Then, turn left at the "Y" just north of 300 Avenue, and follow Business 56 through town. (The road will take a sharp right turn at Trapp Street, and you will go four more blocks). Turning left onto Broadway Street and go 0.2 miles north, finding Prairie Chic on the left, just north of Day Street and Central National Bank.
The view of the Prairie Chic building, with a mural painted by Milt Fleming, as shown from 100 block of South Broadway, next to the Central National Bank.

If you are coming south from exit #295 on I-70 in Junction City, head south on U.S. 77 for 26 miles and turn right onto Arnold Street. Follow the road 0.5 miles to the first stop sign on D Street. Turn left and travel 0.2 miles until you get to Main Street (after a small bridge and an open lot on the right). Turn right and travel 0.2 miles until the stop sign at Broadway Street. Turn left and Prairie Chic is located after the second stop sign, on the right side of the road.
If you are headed in from the north and come in through town, this is the view of our building on Broadway Street from the intersection of Walnut Street.

We offer climate-controlled indoor storage units on a monthly basis. We have 10' x 10' for $105 a month or 5' x 7' for $65 a month, plus a $20 one-time administration fee to start your lease.
